Best Practice Recommendations

1. Update router firmware
   • always check manufacturer's website for the latest firmware!
   • always check Microsoft's Windows Update website for the latest updates!
     • Check for additional updates not included in automatic updates!
2. Update computers
   • always check Microsoft's Windows Update website for the latest updates!
   • check for additional updates not included in automatic updates!
     • Update for Windows XP (KB893357)
       • This update to Windows XP provides support for Wi-Fi Protected Access 2 (WPA2), which is the latest standards-based wireless security solution derived from the IEEE 802.11i standard. (for SP2)
       • You may also need to update the wireless card driver.
3. Change The default router password
   • –Duh! This should be done immediately, from a machine ‘hard-wired’ to the router! 
4. Change the default SSID
   • –Nice idea, but largely ineffective against experienced hackers

5. Enable WPA Encryption

   • At the very least, WPA should be enabled with the maximum password length

   • If possible, use WPA2

6. Disable SSID broadcast

   • Totally ineffective as SSID is required to be broadcast

     • just an annoyance for an experienced hacker

     • may deter wannabe hackers

7.  Enable MAC address filtering

   • Partially ineffective as MAC addresses can be spoofed

     • just an annoyance for an experienced hacker

     • may deter wannabe hackers
